Quickly assess the whole situation 2. Summon appropriate support ASAP 3. Set up shelter if necessary 4. Assess injuries for conditions 5. Arrange care, give advice to the patient, accompany the patient and make a record of the situation ## Establishing rapport with the patient - Actively listening and understanding the patient's needs - Enhancing mutual trust - Respect the patient's preferences and feelings ## When a patient refuses first aid: - Try to comprehend the patient's response - Do not refute or argue - Explain patiently - Call 999/(ambulance) for help if it persists, and observe the patient whilst keeping yourself at a safe distance - Find out if there are relatives or friends to contact Emergency Responses to major incidents 1. Summon support from volunteer first aiders 2. Do NOT approach the scene 3. Call 999 and provide relevant information 1. Nature of the incident 2. Location 3. Traffic 4. Potential Hazard 5. Approximate number of casualties Colour codes at multiple casualty incidents: - Red: must be treated immediately - Yellow: should be treated urgently - Green: has minor injuries and ambulatory - Black: dead, to be handled later How psychological support is important - helps the subject in facing the event and regaining confidence
